Travel Like A Supermodel...On A Small Business Owner's Budget

It's no secret that my modeling career has taken me to exotic locations all over the world. I have worked in South Africa, Italy, Australia, Greece, Turkey, France, Singapore, Sweden... The list goes on and on. But when I cut back on modeling to start a restaurant with my husband (Ian) in 2014, I lost all of those free travel perks. Not only that, but being a small business owner does not pay nearly as well as a model! Every penny goes straight back into my business. It is truly a labor of love, or possibly just stubbornness, but whatever my motivation, my desire to travel never went away. I have made many sacrifices as a small business owner, like working every holiday, passing up modeling jobs because I needed the labor, sacrificing my own paycheck to help my staff, even working over 100 hours weekly when I was short-staffed to keep the place operating smoothly. Travel has been the one thing that Ian and I refused to sacrifice. In this industry, there are a lot of really bad days, and we need(ed) something to inspire us to keep going. I had to find a way to continue exploring the world without my modeling money, and through trial and error, I did. I now consider myself quite an expert on traveling the world without breaking the bank and I want to share my number one travel secret with you because everyone deserves to explore the world.

I stumbled upon a travel company called Next Vacay a little over a year ago and thought, "There's no way this is legitimate." The prices they boasted were just too good to be true. I went back and forth several times before deciding to commit to the $25/year fee. After all, it's research, right? But then the unexpected happened... I loved it. For those of you who aren't familiar, Next Vacay is a travel site that searches all of the cheapest flights from your area. For me, that means that it searches flights from Nashville, Cincinnati, and Atlanta (I live outside of Nashville). I got an option to go to Hawaii for under $400, Amsterdam for $425, Dublin for $475, Beijing for under $400, and the list goes on!

I know what you're thinking. "What kind of shady airline do you have to fly for a $400 international flight?!" You'll be happy to know that there are no shady airlines here. Next Vacay isn't a search engine. It just notifies you when there is a cheap flight. All of the deals are vetted by real people who go by the motto, “We don’t send our member’s any deals we wouldn’t take ourselves.” If you choose to click on the email, it will connect you directly to the airline and then it gives you optional airlines, dates, times. etc. This means that you can book as many tickets as you want for the same low price. Next Vacay also won't send you notifications on cheap flights to dangerous places. They aren't running any specials to war-torn countries or places in political turmoil. The company is also based in America (in Atlanta to be exact) and employs hardworking Americans as well as people all over the world! As a small business owner, supporting businesses that support our economy is important to me.

Did you know that less than half of Americans have their passports? Most people spend their whole lives planning their dream vacation and never actually taking the steps to get there. Traveling can be intimidating. I get it. We only know what we see on the news when it comes to other countries, the news reports scary things! I'd love to see a news station reporting another sunny day in beautiful Istanbul, but that isn't interesting and so, we only hear about cruise ships poisoning their passengers, bomb threats, and stabbings. Truthfully, there are safe and unsafe places in every country, including America. Ian and I were talking to a couple from England in a rooftop pool in Las Vegas. They told us that they came to America because every other country was so scary. The Las Vegas shooting happened the following day. Nothing is guaranteed in this life and choosing not to travel because you're afraid is a waste of time and energy. A meteorite could literally fall out of the sky and kill you while you sit in your house. Every year, people die from coconuts falling on their head! It's out of our control, so don't let your fear of a new place keep you from experiencing a new culture.

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.” - Mark Twain
